5 members of Super 16 Poll falter; 3 take first Loss

November 3, 2024 by CollegeFootballPoll.com Staff

The final weekend before the first reveal of the College Football Playoff committee rankings on Tuesday night saw five members of the Super 16 Poll go down to defeat, three of which lost for the first time this season.

No. 3 Penn State was among those losing its unbeaten status after falling 20-13 at home to Ohio State for the school's eighth straight loss to the Buckeyes. The Nittany Lions were 3-point underdogs

No. 8 Clemson lost for the first time since Georgia spanked the Tigers 34-3 in the season opener. They won each of their next six games by at least 16 points, but Louisville invaded Death Valley and scored 23 straight points to seize control of the game, ultimately winning 33-21. Clemson was a 10.5-point favorite.

No. 9 Texas A&M was a 44-20 loser at South Carolina. The teams were tied at 20-all after the Gamecocks hit a 44-yard field goal just before the break, but the second half was all Gamecocks. Carolina put 24 points on the board while possessions by the Aggies featured four punts, 1 INT, 1 fumble lost,  and a turnover on downs on 4th-and-1 at their own 31.  Texas A&M was favored by just 2.5.

No. 13 Iowa State was a 13.5-point favorite at home over Texas Tech, and an 18.5 -point favorite in the Congrove Computer Rankings at CollegeFootballPoll.com. But the Cyclones were knocked from their unbeaten perch in a game that featured five lead changes with four of those in the second half. Iowa State took a 22-17 lead with 2:11 left on a 44-yard Rocco Becht to Carson Brown connection. A failed 2-point conversion attempt left the door open and Texas Tech barged through it, concluding a 71-yard drive in 12 plays with a 5-yard TD run by Taj Brooks for the 23-22 final outcome.

SMU dealt No. 15 Pitt its first loss, and did so by building an insurmountable 48-11 lead before PItt scored twice in the final 4:01 to make it a 48-25 final. The Panthers had two drives end on downs, one with a pick, and anther with a fumble.  Pitt actually had 29 first downs to SMU's 11 and the yardage battle was only won 467-453 by the 'Stangs.  But the Panthers couldn't complete drives and SMU took advantage of ever Pitt miscue or bad fortune. SMU was a 7.5-point favorite and a whopping 15.78-point computer pick.

The losses by Clemson and Pitt narrow the ACC race down to SMU and Miami, for now. Those are the only two remaining undefeated teams in league play. Both are 5-0 and they do not face each other.

The 'Canes remained undefeated over-all (9-0) in typical Miami fashion.  They fell behind 28-17 at the start of the second half, then closed out the game on a 36-3 run. At least, this time they didn't wait for the final minute or final play.

Joining Miami among the five remaining undefeated teams are Oregon, BYU, Indiana and Army.

Oregon won 38-17 at Michigan, Indiana was a 47-10 blowout winner at Michigan State, and Army scored a 20-3 victory over Air Force at Mile High Stadium.  BYU was idle.

FBS vs. FCS

Oklahoma defeated Maine 59-14 in the only FBS-FCS matchup this week,  and FBS schools are 110-6 in such games this season. They are a cumulative 1,910-158 (.924) since we began tracking this in 2003.

In 2024, there are 121 scheduled scheduled matchups between FBS and FCS schools with 119 schools playing one such game, while Hawaii and UMass each play two.

This year, 15 schools do not play a FCS opponent and 5 are in the B1G (Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, USC and UCLA). Texas is the only school in the SEC that will not play a FCS program. The same is true for Virginia Tech in the ACC. In fact, Texas and Virginia Tech, along with Michigan and Houston, are repeats from last year's list of schools that played all FBS programs.

2024 FCS wins vs. FBS:
August 24: Montana State 35, New Mexico 31
September 7: St. Francis (PA) 23, Kent State 17

September 7: Southern Utah 27, UTEP 24 (OT)
September 21: Monmouth 45, FIU 42
