In advance of next week's Big 12 Media Days in Arlington on Wednesday and Thursday, July 11 and 12th, the Big 12 has released the 2023 college football preseason media poll.
Sixty-seven media members participated in the poll. All work for outlets that cover the conference.
Of those 67 members, 41 voted Texas No. 1. It's the first time since 2009 that the Longhorns were that highly regarded in the poll.
For the record, these polls aren't historically worth much when it comes to predicting the actual outcome of a season. The 2022 poll, which had 41 participants, had Baylor finishing first, ahead of Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas, Kansas State, Iowa State, TCU, West Virginia, Texas Tech and Kansas. Neither Kansas State or TCU received a single first-place vote. Of course, Kansas State won the conference title while TCU advanced to the National Championship and got thumped by Georgia. Meanwhile, the Bears finished tied for 5th and the Sooners tied for 7th. Texas came in third.
In 2021, Oklahoma was a near-unanimous first-place vote collector while eventual champion Oklahoma State was picked 4th.
There are far more voters this year as the conference swells from 10 to 14 teams with the additions of Brigham Young, Central Florida, Cincinnati and Houston. The UCF Knights land at No. 8, while the other three newcomers are in the bottom four.
Regardless, let's check out the entire 2023 poll.
1. Texas (41), 886
2. Kansas State (14), 858
3. Oklahoma (4), 758
4. Texas Tech (4), 729
5. TCU (3), 727
6. Baylor, 572
7. Oklahoma State (1), 470
8. UCF, 463
9. Kansas, 461
10. Iowa State, 334
11. BYU, 318
12. Houston, 215
13. Cincinnati, 202
14. West Virginia, 129
