The first week of the regular season is here! Despite the coronavirus pandemic, 77 of the 130 FBS schools are poised to play football.
Opening week is thin with just 9 games on tap. Five of those pit FBS teams against each other, while the other 4 contests match FBS schools against a few of the small number of FCS teams.playing any football at all this fall.
The slate kicks off on Thursday with South Alabama at Southern Miss, and UAB hosting Central Arkansas.
Then, on Saturday, one of the top teams from a Group of Five conference will take the field when Memphis hosts Arkansas State. The Tigers are looking to repeat as American Conference champs, even with a new head coach at the top as Ryan Silverfield makes his debut. Silverfield takes over for his former boss, Mike Norvell, who left for Florida State. The visiting Red Wolves have a shot at their first Sun Belt title since 2016 when they were co-champs with Appalachian State.
Army West Point also opens on Saturday as the Black Knights host MTSU,
The week wraps up on Labor Day with Navy entertaining BYU.
