Weekend Recap: Holy Cross Upsets Yale, Villanova Scores 3 TD's In Final 5 Minutes To Beat Richmond

Holy Cross, a 10-point underdog in New Haven, upset Yale 20-17 on a 47-yard field goal from Derek Ng with 48 seconds left in the game.

James Madison, the number 1 team in the FCS Congrove Computer Rankings at CollegeFootballPoll.com, journeyed out west to Ogden, Utah and knocked off No. 14 Weber State 37-24.

No. 2 Sam Houston State and No. 4 Montana were idle while No. 3 North Dakota State handled Towson 35-7 on the road.

5th-ranked Alabama A&M was a 30-27 winner at Bethune-Cookman on Thursday night.

No. 17 Villanova scored 3 TD's in the final 5 minutes to erase a 27-13 deficit and down No. 13 Richmond 34-27 in Philadelphia. The Wildcats built a 13-0 lead at the half, only to watch to slip away under a 24-0 burst by the Spiders in the 3rd.

Lamar puled off a 17-10 upset in overtime at Northern Colorado. The Cardinals were a 17-1/2-point underdog in the sportsbooks, but a 0.46-point favorite in the Congrove Computer Rankings at CollegeFootballPoll.com..

Montana State crushed San Diego 52-10 in Bozeman.

Campbell obliterated Presbyterian 72-0 after the Blue Hose came in to the game with a 2-0 record and were only 11.5-point underdogs. The computer had Presbyterian favored by 1.30 points to pull off an upset.

Eastern Washington held on for a 62-56 win over Western Illinois after building a 55-21 halftime lead and holding a 62-28 advantage with less than 10 minutes to play in the 3rd quarter. After pulling to with 6 with 2:02 left in the game, the Eagles were able to run out the clock on the Leathernecks. The game had 1,387 yards of offense, including 1,016 through the air.

A week after beating Florida State, Jacksonville State had to hold of North Alabama 27-24. 

This weekend provided the first action for Ivy League teams since 2019 and witnessed league favorites Dartmouth and Princeton find the win column while Yale took one on the chin. The Big Green defeated Valparaiso 28-18, the Tigers were 32-0 victors at Lehigh, but the Bulldogs fell 20-17 to Holy Cross.

In other Ivy League games, Rhode Island thumped Brown 45-24, Cornell lost 31-21 to VMI,  Columbia crushed Marist 37-14, Pennsylvania whipped Bucknell 30-6, and Harvard routed Georgetown 44-9.

FCS vs. FBS

2 teams will play 2 FCS teams this fall (UConn and UMass), and 115 teams will play 1 FCS school for a total of 117 such matchups.

21 such games tool place this week. A pair of FCS teams were favored to win, but Murray State lost 27-10 as a 4.54-point computer choice at Bowling Green, and South Carolina State lost 43-35 as an 11.89-point favorite at New Mexico State. However, there were two FCS winners as Incarnate Word downed Texas State 42-34 and Northern Arizona topped Arizona 21-19.

FBS schools are 86-10 in such games this season. Since we began tracking this in 2003, the FBS teams are now 1,555-138 (.918).

Last year, 30 FBS teams played a total of just 34 games against FCS schools and the FCS won just 1 game (1-33). That honor also went to Jacksonville State with its 19-10 victory over FIU.
