Jackson State is No. 1 after Montana falls in Upset - Weekend Recap, Rankings

October 16, 2022 by CollegeFootballPoll.com Staff

Montana's loss on Saturday becomes Jackson State's gain as the Tigers ascend to the top of the latest FCS Congrove Computer Rankings, released Sunday afternoon after the completion of the River City HBCU Classic. Alabama A&M defeated Arkansas-Pine Bluff 34-31 in that game.

The Griz and Tigers had been ranked 1-2 for the last four weeks, but Montana's reign ends with their 30-23 upset loss at home to 18.5-point underdog Idaho. Meanwhile, Deion "Prime Time" Sanders' team went out and rolled to a 48-8 win over Bethune-Cookman in front of more than 20,000 in Jacksonville. Months ago, the game was relocated from Daytona Beach, home of BC-U, to the NFL's Jaguars' stadium to avoid the Biketoberfest crowds in Daytona. It turned out to be a great move as, by contrast, BC-U's home stadium holds 10,000.

Meanwhile, Montana's shocking loss sends the Griz tumbling to No. 8 while Sacramento State ascends from 3rd to 2nd while Weber State rises from 4th to 3rd. Idle Holy Cross moves up from 5th to 4th.

The Hornets romped 52-28 at Eastern Washington, and the Wildcats roared 42-7 at Portland State.

The game of the week on Saturday sent South Dakota State, then No. 6 in the Congrove Computer Rankings, to play 7th-ranked North Dakota State in the 113th edition of that rivalry. And for the third straight season, it was the Jackrabbits that claimed the Dakota Marker with a 23-21 win over the Bison. That resulted lifted SDSU two spots to 5th while dropping NDSU to 11th.

Montana State climbs two places to 8th, while Princeton and Incarnate Word round the top ten.

The Bobcats were 37-14 winners at Northern Colorado, the Ivy League's Tigers were 35-19 victors at home on Friday over Brown, and the Cardinals flew to a 49-14 win at Nicholls State.

No. 12 Jacksonville State downed North Alabama 47-31 in front of over 10,000 in a neutral site game at the home of the Rocket City Trash Pandas in Madison, Alabama.

No. 13 Chattanooga and Samford continue to pace the SoCon. The Mocs were 41-13 winners at VMI while the No. 16 Bulldogs were idle.

No. 15 William & Mary and No. 17 Delaware also had a bye week, while No. 14 Penn took care of Columbia 234-14 at home.

Other games of note saw Texas A&M-Commerce rise to 4-2 overall, 2-0 in the Southland, with a 40-15 win over McNeese State. It's the first season at the FCS level for the Lions.

First-year FCS member Lindenwood, playing in the OVC, is also 4-2 overall after scoring a double-overtime 37-34 upset win at Eastern Illinois.

Stonehill, the third new FCS member, came up short by a score of 40-27 at Sacred Heart for its first loss of the season.
