FCS Weekend Recap: Montana Upsets Washington, South Dakota State Crushes Colorado State; Sam Houston & JMU Roll In Openers

Montana scored the biggest upset of the week as the Griz snagged a 13-7 win at Washington on Saturday. The Huskies became the first ranked FBS team to lose to a FCS school since Iowa fell to North Dakota State in 2016.  Montana was a 22.5-point underdog at DraftKings and a 29.69-point computer underdog. It was the 5th FCS win over a FBS school on Labor Day weekend. The Griz entered the game at No. 4 in the FCS computer rankings while Washington was No. 16 in the FBS rankings.

UConn became the 4th FBS squad to fall victim earlier in the day with a 38-28 loss to Holy Cross.

South Dakota State went to Colorado State on Friday night and crushed the Rams 42-23 for the third FCS win over a FBS program in two days. Holy Cross picked up a 4th FCS win on Saturday with its 38-28 victory at UConn. On Thursday night, UC Davis took down Tulsa 19-17, and Eastern Washington followed suit with a 35-33 win in double-overtime at UNLV.

Defending FCS champion Sam Houston State racked up 591 yards of offense and rolled to a 42-16 win at Northern Arizona. The Bearkats are ranked second in the FCS Congrove Computer Rankings.

The computer's top-ranked team, James Madison, was a 45.5-point favorite in the sportsbooks and easily beat the spread with a 68-10 romp over Morehead State.

No. 3 North Dakota State, the computer's favorite on the MVFC,was a nearly 20-point computer choice at home over Albany and prevailed 28-6.

No. 8 Alabama A&M had a tough opening draw by hosting South Carolina State as a 6.56-point computer play and won 42-41.

UAB and Jacksonville State jump-started the weekend with a Wednesday night contest in the Montgomery Kick-off that saw the Blazers blank the Gamecocks 31-0.

D2 school Southern Connecticut State upset FCS Central Connecticut State 28-21. The last time we had seen the Blue Devils, they were finishing off an 11-2 season with a first round NCAA playoff loss to Alabany on November 30, 2019. The last time we saw the Owls (SCSU), they were wrapping up a 2-8 season on November 16, 2019. Lindy's and HeroSports picked CSSU to finish 3rd in the NEC this year while the computer has the Blue Devils winning the conference and ranked 7th over-all.

D2 West Florida also pulled off the upset of an FCS foe as the Argonauts defeated McNese State 42-36.

NAIA member Indiana Wesleyan downed FCS member Valparaiso 28-10.

Six FCS teams knocked off FCS schools over the Labor Day weekend.

On Saturday, Vanderbilt was smothered 23-3 by East Tennessee State, and UConn fell 38-28 to Holy Cross.

VMI picked up where it left off in the spring, clubbing Davidson 45-24. Both schools were eliminated if the NCAA playoff in the spring.

Jackson State and Florida A&M continued the action into Sunday with the Orange Blossom Classic in Miami. Shedeur Sanders' QB sneak with 11:37 to go in the second quarter proved to be all the points the Tigers needed for the 7-6 upset win over the Rattlers. Shedeur, of course, is the son of JSU head coach and NFL Hall-of-Famer (2011) Deion Sanders.

Also on Sunday, the Black College Hall of Fame Classic in Canton saw Grambling State upset Tennessee State 16-10.  The TSU Tigers are led by Eddie George who was also inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame in 2011. Tennessee State outgained Grambling in the game but was called for 18 penalties for 150 yards.

FCS vs. FBS

2 teams will play 2 FCS teams this fall (UConn and UMass), and 115 teams will play 1 FCS school for a total of 117 such matchups.

There were a whopping 38 FBS-FCS games over the Labor Day weekend and FBS schools went 32-6. Since we began tracking this in 2003, the FBS teams are now 1,501-134 (.918) through Labor Day weekend.

Last year, 30 FBS teams played a total of just 34 games against FCS schools and the FCS won just 1 game (1-33).
