A walk-off 59-yard pass to Damond Philyaw-Johnson from Zerrick Cooper lifted Jacksonville State to a 20-17 upset of Florida State on Saturday night. A seemingly unprepared FSU defense allowed the receiver to get behind the coverage as Philyaw-Johnson caught the ball at the 20 and eluded two poor tackling attempts to hit paydirt.
Merrimack was a 35-21 upset winner at Holy Cross, giving the Warriors their first-ever win against a ranked FCS opponent.
Meanwhile, the top-ranked teams all picked up victories at home as No. 1 James Madison plastered Maine 55-7, Sam Houston State brushed off SEMO 52-14, Montana romped 42-7 over Western Illinois, North Dakota State bullied Valparaiso 64-0, Delaware downed St. Francis 27-10, and South Dakota State crushed D2 Lindenwood 52-7.
Jackson State won the Southern Heritage Classic as Deion Sanders and Company downed Eddie George and Tennessee State 38-16.
In some other games of note, Bryant upset Sacred Heart 17-6, UC Davis destroyed San Diego 53-7, Charleston Southern upset at The Citadel 38-21, and Dayton scored a 17-10 mild upset win over Eastern Illinois.
Elsewhere, Monmouth got a hard-fought 26-23 win at Fordham, Incarnate Word buried Prairie View A&M 40-9, and Northern Colorado blasted Houston Baptist 45-13.
South Dakota's 34-7 home win over Northern Arizona was easier than many expected, as was Northern Iowa's 34-16 rout at Sacramento State.
Presbyterian, under new head coach Kevin Kelley, as outscored its first two opponents 152-46. The Blue Hose won their opener 84-43 over St. Andrews (NAIA) and then knocked off D2 school Fort Lauderdale 68-3 on Saturday.
2 teams will play 2 FCS teams this fall (UConn and UMass), and 115 teams will play 1 FCS school for a total of 117 such matchups.
There were 37 FBS-FCS games over the weekend and FBS schools went 35-2. Since we began tracking this in 2003, the FBS teams are now 1,536-136 (.919). Of the two losses, Florida State's 20-17 setback to Jacksonville State was the least expected as the 'Noles nearly won their opener over Notre Dame while the Gamecocks were blanked 31-0 by UAB in their opener. None of that mattered as JSU scored the winning touchdown on a 59-yard walk-off TD pass.
Duquesne delivered the other blow, edging Ohio 28-26.
Last year, 30 FBS teams played a total of just 34 games against FCS schools and the FCS won just 1 game (1-33). That honor also went to Jacksonville State with its 19-10 victory over FIU.
