October 8, 2023 by CollegeFootballPoll.com Staff

Then-No. 30 Youngstown State (AFCA Coaches' Poll) blasted No. 5 Southern Illinois 31-3 on Saturday in one of several games that will alter the rankings.

No. 9 William & Mary fell for the second straight week, bowing 27-13 at Virginia, the lowest-ranked autonomy five school in the FBS. The Tribe fell 14-6 at Elon the previous week, and the Phoenix turned around and lost 34-23 at home to No. 11 North Carolina Central this week.

Northern Arizona took down a second Top 25 team on Saturday with a 27-10 win at No. 14 Weber State. The Lumberjacks got a 28-14 home win over then-No. 11 Montana two weeks ago.

Speaking of Montana, the 13th-ranked Griz were 31-23 winners at No. 18 UC-Davis.

N0. 17 Western Carolina was a 52-50 winner in a wild game with a wild finish at No. 20 Chattanooga. The Catamounts kicked the game-winning 32-yard field goal with four seconds left, just 49 seconds after the Mocs had taken a 50-49 lead on a 5-yard touchdown pass and a two-point conversion pass from running back Ailym Ford to Camden Overton.

Another Top 25 battle saw No. 23 UT-Martin secure a 28-27 overtime win at No. 25 (tie) Eastern Illinois. Kinkead Dent's 7-yard pass to Max Dowling gave the Skyhawks the lead and the Panthers answered, but when they went for 2 and the win, they came up with zero and the loss.

Nol. 1 South Dakota State continued its march toward a repeat championship opportunity with a 40-21 win at Illinois State while No. 2 Montana State joined 7th-ranked Sacramento State and 24th-ranked New Hampshire on the sideline with a bye week.

No. 3 Idaho was a 42-14 winner at a Cal Poly team that heads to Montana State next.

4th-ranked Furman was a 28-24 home winner over The Citadel, and 6th-ranked Incarnate Word was a 33-26 winner at home over SE Louisiana.
