FCS Weekend Recap - Jackrabbits Back In Win Column - Barely

October 27, 2024 by CollegeFootballPoll.com Staff

It looked like it was going to be a weekend of upsets when Saturday began with 8 favored teams losing in the first 14 games that went final, and Friday night's Yale win at Penn had started it all off. But normalcy prevailed afterward and the computer went 42-17 on outright winners while turning in a sterling 36-22 mark against the spread.

The computer is, of course, the Congrove Computer Rankings which began serving up a FCS formula during the Covid season after presenting FBS rankings and picks since 1993. An NFL version was started this year. All versions are hosted at CollegeFootallPoll.com

The big game this week involved South Dakota State for the second consecutive week. Last week, the Jackrabbits went to the Fargodome and fell 13-9. This week, they returned home as the No. 4 team to face No. 2 South Dakota and righted the ship with a 20-17 win over overtime. A late touchdown by South Dakota on a scoop-and-score, and a missed by the Coyotes with 26 seconds left in regulation, lead to this game going to overtime. In the extra period, South Dakota had to settle for a field goal and SDSU answered by converting a 4th-and-1 at the 16, and later scoring on 2nd-and-goal from the 3 on a run by Amar Johnson.

Yale jump started the weekend with a 31-0 upset at Penn where the Bulldogs were 3.5-point underdogs.

No. 1 Montana State and No. 11 Dartmouth entered the weekend as the remaining undefeated teams in the FCS. The Bobcats were idle, while the Big Green were 24-21 upset winners at Columbia as 3.5-point dogs.

No. 3 North Dakota State welcomed the break of playing at No. 117 Murray State and stomped the Racers, 59-6.

No. 5 Delaware rebounded from last week's 28-9 loss at Richmond with a 28-14 win at home over Albany.

6th-ranked UC Davis joined Montana State on the list of teams with a bye week.

Meanwhile, No. 7 Montana was a 24-0 winner at Northern Colorado, while 8th-ranked Missouri State won 49-41 at Northern Iowa, 9th-ranked Tarleton scored a 27-17 win at Austin Peay and SE Missouri edged visiting Gardner-Webb 30-24.

Perhaps the most surprising upset of the day was No. 12 North Dakota falling 41-40 in overtime at Youngstown State, though that outcome could be rivaled by No. 20 Williams & Mary's 35-17 loss at Stony Brook.

FCS vs. FBS

No FBS-FCS games were scheduled last week for the fourth straight week. One such game took place this week when Wagner visited UMass and the Minutemen prevailed 35-7.

FBS schools are 109-6 in such games this season, and a collective 1,908-158 (.924) since we began tracking this in 2003.

In 2024, there are 121 scheduled scheduled matchups between FBS and FCS schools with 119 schools playing one such game, while Hawaii and UMass each play two.

This year, 15 schools do not play a FCS opponent and 5 are in the B1G (Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, USC and UCLA). Texas is the only school in the SEC that will not play a FCS program. The same is true for Virginia Tech in the ACC. In fact, Texas and Virginia Tech, along with Michigan and Houston, are repeats from last year's list of schools that played all FBS programs.

2024 FCS wins vs. FBS:
August 24: Montana State 35, New Mexico 31
September 7: St. Francis (PA) 23, Kent State 17
September 7: Idaho 17, Wyoming 13
September 7: Southern Utah 27, UTEP 24 (OT)
September 21: Monmouth 45, FIU 42

In 2023, FBS schools were 114-4. These were the FCS wins last year:
