FCS Weekend Recap - 14 Upsets, Plus a Big Win by William & Mary

October 9, 2022 by Staff

There were 14 outright upsets in the FCS ranks this week, perhaps none of which was more stunning than FCS newcomer Texas A&M-Commerce knocking off 17th-ranked SE Louisiana 31-28 in Hammond.

As far as point differential is concerned, Butler's 31-0 romp over 11.5-point favorite Dayton produced the largest swing at 42.5, Southern's 45-13 rout at Prairie View (-3.5) was second with a 35.5-point swing.

Other shockers saw Central Arkansas (-24)  lose 52-49 at home to first-year FCS member Lindenwood which is now 3-2 on the year, and St. Thomas (MN) upset Davidson (-6) 27-16 in St. Paul.

Meanwhile, Merrimack won 28-21 at Duquesne (-3.5), Illinois State prevailed 23-21 at Northern Iowa (-9), and Marist pulled away for a 45-31 win at Stetson (-3.5).

Still more upsets saw Southern Illinois romp 38-21 at Missouri State (-2), Norfolk State capture a 24-21 win at Morgan State (-2.5), North Dakota bag a 35-30 win at Youngstown State (-2.5),  and Tarleton State eclipse Southern Utah on the road 42-40.

North Dakota State almost became an upset victim. Back-to-back touchdowns the 3rd and 4th quarters gave the Bison a 31-20 cushion after trailing 19-17, and NDSU went on to win 31-25. Up next for North Dakota State is the 113th meeting with South Dakota State in the Dakota Marker series. The Jackrabbits have taken two straight as the rivalry moves to Fargo. South Dakota State was a 28-3 home winner over South Dakota in the 117th edition of that rivalry. South Dakota had taken two straight.

Top-ranked Montana was idle, while No. 2 Jackson State won 26-12 at Alabama State.

Some other games of key importance saw Weber State thump Eastern Washington 45-21, Sacramento State annihilate Northern Colorado 55-7, Holy Cross blast Bucknell 57-0, and Montana State roll 37-6 over Idaho State.

Penn continues to look strong in the Ivy League as the Quakers squashed Georgetown 58-28, while Dartmouth continues to fade with a 24-21 loss at Yale that drops the defending champs to 1-3 over-all and 0-2 in the conference,

Speaking of the Ivy League, Harvard opened the FCS weekend on Friday with a 35-28 win at Cornell.

William & Mary was a 27-21 winner at home in a key CAA showdown with Delaware. Before the contest, the Congrove Computer Rankings at CollegeFootballPoll.com had the Tribe ranked 15th and the Blue Hens 10th. The latest rankings, released overnight, put William & Mary at 13 and Delaware at 15.

The CAA now has 5 teams ranked between 13 and 23 after Elon (21) was a 27-21 winner of Towson, while Villanova (22) and Richmond (23) were idle.

Wofford Coach Resigns Before 'L' Streak Moves To 16

This past Thursday, Wofford head coach Josh Conklin abruptly resigned with his team in a 15-game skid. Offensive coordinator Shawn Watson was named interim head coach. Wofford put up a fight on Saturday, but fell 28-14 at Samford for a 16th straight loss. Wofford opened last season with a win over Elon and hasn't tasted victory since.

Wofford's skid is still way behind Wagner's 25-game losing streak.
