Week 8 'Coaches' Poll Top 25' Matchups (3)

(1) South Dakota State 17 at (12) Southern Illinois 10
The Jackrabbits have now taken 7 of the last 8 and avenged a 42-41 loss in Brookings in the previous meeting in 2021.

(2) Montana State 42 at (4) Sacramento State 30
The Bobcats capture the Big Sky showdown and improved to 25-3 in conference play since 2019 while Sac State fell to that same record during that period. The lone loss for the Bobcats this year was a 29-16 setback at current No. 1 South Dakota State on September 9 in a non-conference game. These combatants both went 8-0 in conference play in 2022 and hadn't met since 2019, when Sac State became the most recent visiting team to win in Bobcat Stadium. The Hornets also won the prior meeting at home in 2016 to end an 8-game series losing streak that dated back to 2005.

(3) Furman 29 at (14) Western Carolina 17
Furman improved to 6-1 (4-0 SoCon) while the homestanding Catamounts drop to 5-2 (3-1 SoCon. At the start of the season, Furman was ranked 4th by the computer while Western Carolina was ranked 39th by the computer and was nowhere among the 50 teams receiving votes in the Coaches' Poll. The Catamounts were looking to make just their second-ever FCS playoff appearance, and their first since 1983 when they lost 43-7 to Southern Illinois in the championship game in Charleston, South Carolina on The Citadel campus. An undefeated finish will ne necessary to have any hope of keeping that dream alive.

Furman has made the FCS playoffs 19 times and is 20-18 in those games. The Paladins won the 1988 championship with a 17-12 victory over the legendary Erk Russell who went 16-2 in the playoffs with Georgia Southern. That title game was played in Pocatello, Idaho on the campus of Idaho State. Furman had lost in the '85 game to Georgia Southern, and later fell to Montana in the 2001 title match. Just last season, Furman was eliminated in a second round game, 41-38, at a 7-seed Incarnate Word team that made it to the semifinals.
