#1 seed South Dakota State and #2 seed Montana will meet in Frisco on January 7 for the national championship.
Both were preseason picks to make the playoffs by the Congrove Computer Rankings at CollegeFootballPoll.com.
In the first season under new head coach Jimmy Rogers, the Jackrabbits are headed back to the national championship game after giving John Stiegelmeier the title last year. Stiegelmeier resigned and the school handed the reins to his long-term assistant in the offseason.
This game, which many expected to be highly-contested, was a rout from the beginning as the Jackrabbits put together a near-flawless performance in a 59-0 shutout. Per the SDSU athletics website, the top-seeded Jackrabbits scored in all three phases of the game in improving to 14-0 overall and running their winning streak to 28 games dating back to the 2022 campaign. UAlbany, which was seeded fifth, ended its season with an 11-4 overall record.
The entire recap of the game can be found here.
Junior Bergen, who had a kick-off return and a punt return for TD's in the 35-28 overtime win over Furman last week, added to his Montana football legend status in Saturday's 31-29 overtime win over North Dakota State.
Bergen had a 47-yard punt return TD early in the 4th, and threw a 2-point pass in the second OT that proved to be the game-winning points when the Bisons' 2-point conversion attempt was intercepted in the end zone on a similar play call. Bergen was under heavy pressure, but escaped being pulled down by the facemask. The pass deflected off of one receiver in the end zone and into the hands of Keelan White to make it 31-23.
It was the second OT game for both teams in the playoffs.
It was the final game for NDSU head coach Matt Entz who announced on December 10 that he will resign after the playoffs to accept the linebackers coaching position under Lincoln Riley at USC.
