FCS Recap and Computer Rankings -- Five AQ Bids Clinched, 5 More to Go

November 17, 2024 by CollegeFootballPoll.com Staff

With 34 seconds left in the game at UC-Davis, Montana State intercepted the Aggies' 2-point conversion pass attempt to seal a 30-28 victory. It was the de facto Big Sky Championship game with an automatic qualifier bid to the FCS Playoffs on the line.

Montana State, the only undefeated FCS team, stays No. 1 in this week's computer ranking of all 129 teams, ahead of a trio of MVFC schools that continue to hold down the Nos. 2 through 4 spots -- North Dakota State, South Dakota State and South Dakota.

UC Davis wasn't damaged much at all in the ranking. The Aggies simply swapped places with Delaware at 5th and 6th.

Harvard clinched at least a share of the Ivy League and inched up one spot to 7th, while Incarnate Word claimed the Southland's AQ bid and moved up a spot to 8th.

South Carolina State is the highest-ranked HBCU as the Bulldogs clinched the MEAC title with a 54-7 win at Morgan State and rocketed 15 spots up the chart to No. 9.

Speaking of HBCU's, Jackson State (East) and Southern (West) each claimed their respective division races in the SWAC and will meet in the championship game on December 7 at 2 p.m. EST. The school with the best conference record plays host for the contest which will be broadcast on ESPN-2. Right now, the Tigers are undefeated and the Jaguars have one loss.

Richmond was a  24-21 winner at Hampton and rounds out the top 10 after clinching the AQ bid for the CAA in its last year in the conference. The Spiders are moving to the Patriot League next year.

Abilene Christian clinched the UAC's AQ bid and moved back into the top 25 at No. 24.

Mercer had already claimed the AQ bid for the SoCon and checks in at No. 18 after a 52-7 loss at Alabama.

Bids to the Big South/OVC, as well as the MVFC, NEC, Patriot and Pioneer are still to be determined.

FCS vs. FBS

Two games matched FCS schools against FBS programs. Murray State lost 48-6 at Kentucky, and Mercer fell 52-7 at Alabama.

FBS schools are 112-6 in FBS-FCS games this season. They are a cumulative 1,912-158 (.924) since we began tracking this in 2003.

In 2024, there were 121 matchups scheduled between FBS and FCS schools with 119 playing one such game, while Hawaii and UMass each play two.

This year, 15 schools were not scheduled to play a FCS opponent. Of those fifteen schools, 5 are in the B1G (Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, USC and UCLA). Texas is the only school in the SEC that will not play a FCS program. The same is true for Virginia Tech in the ACC. In fact, Texas and Virginia Tech, along with Michigan and Houston, are repeats from last year's list of schools that played all FBS programs.
