FCS Computer Rankings and Week 6 Recap: Coyotes Back To No. 1

October 6, 2024 by CollegeFootballPoll.com Staff

South Dakota and South Dakota State both jump over Delaware to take the top two slots in the new FCS Congrove Computer Rankings of all 129 FCS teams, released on Sunday. North Dakota State and Montana State stay at Nos. 4 and 5, respectively.

The Coyotes embarrassed Murray State in front of their own fans with a 59-0 romp, while the two-time defending champion Jackrabbits were almost as equally unfriendly to Northern Iowa in front of the Panther faithful with a 41-3 romp.

Delaware remained undefeated with a 42-35 win at Monmouth, but the Blue Hens are ineligible for the FCS Championship as they begin the transition process to join the FBS and Conference USA next season. That effectively means the three highest-ranked FCS playoff eligible teams are all in the Missouri Valley Football Conference.

North Dakota State welcomed rival North Dakota to Fargo, only to send the Fighting Hawks back to Grand Forks with a 41-17 loss. As a result, North Dakota fell from 9 to 14 in the rankings.

Idaho was a 23-17 winner in the Kibbie Dome over Northern Arizona and regained some of the ground it lost in the rankings last week when the Vandals were handed a 28-26 loss at UC Davis. Idaho, which moved down from 5 to 8 last week, moves back up to 6 this week.

Villanova checks in at number 7 after a 42-24 win at Stony Brook, while Butler jumps from 12 to 8 after rolling to a 40-6 win at home over Morehead State.

Montana takes a dive from 6 to 9 after the Griz lost 55-48 at home in overtime to Weber State. Montana had just taken a 48-45 lead with 59 seconds left on QB Logan Fife's 13-yard hookup with Keelan White. But the Wildcats were not done as they managed to run 9 plays, after a touchback on the kick-off, to move to the Montana 26 to set up the 43-yard field goal as time expired in regulation. In overtime, Richie Munoz threw his sixth TD pass of the game, a 7-yarder to Damon Bankston. The defense then sacked Fife, forcing a fumble on Montana's first play and recovered the ball to end the game.

UC Davis is up three spots to 10 as a 27-26 win at Portland came on a walk-off touchdown, at the end of a 94-yard drive, to improve the Aggies to 5-1 and 2-0 in the Big Sky.

Central Arkansas descends from 7 to 12 due to a 41-34 loss at Abilene Christian. The win moved the Wildcats into the Top 25 at number 24. The Bears scored the last 14 points and pulled within 7 with 1:38 to go. With a full compliment of timeouts, they did not try an onside kick and were quickly able to force a punt and get the ball back at their own 32 with 1:11 still on the clock. But a Will McElvain pass was intercepted by Will Shaffer on the second play to secure the win for ACU.

William & Mary plummets from 11 to 19 after a 34-27 loss at Towson. It was the second straight win the series for the Tigers, and the fourth in the last six meetings. The Tribe, who trailed 34-13 in the 4th quarter, rallied to within a TD with 2:05 to play but Towson was able to run out the clock after the kickoff.

New Hampshire takes a massive hit, plunging from 17 to 31 after a 28-23 loss at Harvard dropped the 'Cats to 3-2.

Penn took an even deeper dive, falling from 24 to 43 upon a 20-17 loss at Dartmouth.

Three different teams have held the No. 1 spot with the Jackrabbits in possession in weeks 1 and 5, the Coyotes in weeks 2 and 7, and the Blue Hens in weeks 3 and 4 and 6.

The FCS version of the Congrove Computer Rankings began in the 2020 Covid season. The FBS version of the rankings has been around since 1993 and is a recognized national selector by the NCAA. An NFL version began this year.

Ten conferences are represented among the Top 25 schools. The MVFC leads all conferences with six, followed by the Big Sky with four. Three conferences each have 3 teams in the Top 25 - the Coastal Athletic, the Ivy League and the United Athletic Football Conference. The Pioneer has two, while the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, the Southern Conference, the Southland, and the Ohio Valley/Big South Football Associate each has one.

The highest ranked team in the Southwestern Athletic Conference is Jackson State at No. 34, while Duquesne checks in at No. 45 to lead the Northeastern Conference.

FBS vs. FCS

No FBS-FCS games were played over the weekend.

FBS schools are 108-6 in such games this season, and a collective 1,908-158 (.924) since we began tracking this in 2003.

In 2024, there are 121 scheduled scheduled matchups between FBS and FCS schools with 119 schools playing one such game, while Hawaii and UMass each play two.

This year, 15 schools do not play a FCS opponent and 5 are in the B1G (Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, USC and UCLA). Texas is the only school in the SEC that will not play a FCS program. The same is true for Virginia Tech in the ACC. In fact, Texas and Virginia Tech, along with Michigan and Houston, are repeats from last year's list of schools that played all FBS programs.
