C-USA Media Members Pick Houston To Win 2009 College Football Title

CFP Staff
July 26, 2009

A panel of 24 media members covering Conference USA football have voted East Carolina and Houston as the teams to beat in their respective divisions in 2009. The Cougars narrowly won the vote for conference champion, 11-10 over the Pirates.

The championship game is staged each year at the division-winner with the best league record.

Since moving to a two-division format in 2005, only five different schools - East Carolina, Houston, Southern Miss, Tulsa and UCF - have advanced to the championship game, but a different school has claimed each of the four contests. Tulsa won at UCF in '05, Houston at home in '06 over Southern Miss, UCF at home in '07 over Tulsa, and ECU at Tulsa last year.

East Carolina received all but 4 first-place votes to repeat as East champions, while Southern Miss grabbed the remaining 4. Houston garnered 22-of-24 1st-place votes to take the West, and Tulsa took the other 2.

The Congrove Computer Rankings, hosted here at, projects a rematch between East Carolina and Tulsa in the championship game with Tulsa winning the title.

The league will not have a coaches poll released this season.
