Tuberville Era Over At Auburn

Staff
12/03/08

Tommy Tuberville is out as the head coach of Auburn. A relationship that pinballed between hot and cold with boosters and fans is now over.

The Tigers recently completely a 5-7 season with a 36-0 loss to rival Alabama.

In preseason voting, the SEC media ranked Auburn as the top team in the Western Division. The Congrove Computer Rankings projected a 1st-place tie between LSU and Auburn with the Bayou Bengals winning the tie-breaker.

After a 4-1 start, Auburn lost six straight games to FBS teams. The only victory it tasted since the end of September was a lackluster 37-20 triumph over Tennessee-Martin, a team that finished 8-4 in the Championship Subdivision.

Tuberville was 85-40 in ten seasons at Auburn. His 2004 squad won the SEC Championship and finished 13-0 with a 16-13 win over Virginia Tech in the Sugar Bowl. Auburn was one of five teams to finish the 2004 regular season undefeated, joined by Oklahoma, USC, Boise State and Utah. Oklahoma and USC played for the BCS title with the Trojans prevailing 55-19. The Tigers were 2nd in the final AP and Coaches' polls.

Tuberville's 2000 team lost to Florida in the SEC Championship game.

Tuberville was 52-30 in SEC games, including the two SEC Championship game appearances. His teams went to bowl games every season, except his first (1999) and last (2008). He was 5-3 in bowl games.

Including a 4-year stint with Ole Miss prior to coaching Auburn, Tuberville is 110-60 in a 14-year career as a head coach.

He was the defensive coordinator for the 1993 national championship team at Miami. The following year, he was the defensive coordinator for a Texas A&M squad that went 10-0-1. That Aggie squad missed the postseason due to NCAA probation and narrowly avoided the death penalty.

Athletic director Jay Jacobs later commented that he was "shocked" by Tuberville's decision to resign, and stated that the school had no intention of firing him.
