On Eve Of "The Game", Schembechler Passes Away

by Michael Louis

Legendary football coach Glenn Edward "Bo" Schembechler passed away Friday (November 17) at the age of 77. The former Michigan coach and Athletic Director had suffered heart attacks in 1970 and 1987, and twice had quadruple bypass operations. Reports said his heart simply quit working within a couple of hours after taping his weekly show at the WXYZ-TV studios outside of Detroit.

Schembechler played for Woody Hayes at Miami University in Ohio, then began his coaching career as a graduate assistant under Hayes at Ohio State. After a six-year head coaching stint at Miami University, he became head coach at Michigan in 1969 and beat his mentor's undefeated team in his first sideline match-up with Hayes.

Schembechler won, or shared, 13 Big 10 titles in his 21 years as head coach of the Wolverines. He never had a losing season at Miami or Michigan, and a 6-6 mark with the Wolverines in 1984 was his worst.
