FEATURED MOMENT:

Nov. 14, 1899: Sewanee (now University of the South) tops Mississippi to complete an amazing five-win road trip in six days. Other key victories come over Texas 12-0, Texas A&M 10-0, Tulane 23-0, and LSU 34-0. The trip covers more than 3,000 miles, and the small charter steam train carrying the team makes stops at apple orchards along the way to feed Sewanee student-athletes.

OTHER NOTABLE DATES:

Nov. 13, 1982: Undefeated SMU uses a “throwback” lateral on a kickoff with 17 seconds left on the clock to stay undefeated at 10-0, edging Texas Tech 34-27 in the “Miracle on Fourth Avenue” in Lubbock. Deep receiver Blane Smith “bobbles” the final return and then lateraled across the field to Bobby Leach, who returned the kick 91 yards officially as time expired. The Mustangs go on to finish 11-0-1 and No. 2 in the final polls.

Nov. 15, 1890: Minnesota and Wisconsin meet for the first time ever as the Golden Gophers roll to a 63-0 triumph. It’s just the fourth game ever played by the Badgers and begins a 117-year rivalry between the Big Ten Conference members. The teams play continuously from 1890-1905 and then 1907-present, competing for Paul Bunyan’s Axe.

Nov. 16, 1957: Notre Dame stops Oklahoma’s modern-day NCAA FBS winning streak at 47 games with a 7-0 shutout over coach Bud Wilkinson’s Sooners in Norman, Okla. Notre Dame’s defense stops OU on drives at the ND 13, 34 and 23-yard lines while Fighting Irish HB Dick Lynch scores the game’s lone touchdown on a three-yard pitch play with 3:50 left in the fourth quarter.

Nov. 17, 1900: Novelist Mark Twain is so impressed with Yale’s performance in a 29-5 victory at Princeton, he was quoted as saying, “The Yale team could lick a Spanish Army.” Yale would finish 12-0.

Nov. 18, 1977: Davey O’Brien, winner of the 1938 Heisman Trophy and star TCU quarterback, dies after a long illness in Fort Worth, Texas. The College Football Hall of Famer is memorialized with the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Trophy.

Nov. 19, 1966: Penn State keeps its streak alive of 28 seasons with a record of .500 or better with a 48-24 triumph at Pittsburgh. The Nittany Lions use the rushing of wingback Bobby Campbell (14 carries for 137 yards and two TDs) as well as one touchdown reception to finish the year at 5-5.
