FEATURED MOMENT:

Oct. 14, 1889: Christy Mathewson of Bucknell boots a 40-yard dropkick for the only points in the Bison’s 5-0 victory over Lehigh. He later becomes one of just four student-athletes who are members of both the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown and the College Baseball Hall of Fame in Lubbock, Texas.


OTHER NOTABLE DATES:

Oct. 9, 2004: Texas Tech sets an opponents’ record with 10 touchdowns and 70 points in a 70-10 Big 12 Conference triumph over Nebraska in Lubbock, Texas. QB Sonny Cumbie does most of the damage with 436 passing yards and five aerial TDs.

Oct. 10, 1992: Michigan and Michigan State set a then-NCAA attendance record for football crowds with 106,788 fans at the “Big House” in Ann Arbor. Tyrone Wheatley paces the Wolverines to a 35-10 victory with 172 yards and two touchdowns.

Oct. 11, 1986: Ball State kicker John Diettrich sets a Mid-American Conference record (still standing) with a 62-yard field as the Cardinals top Ohio 30-9 in Muncie, Ind.

Oct. 12, 2003: Boston College becomes the 12th school to join the Atlantic Coast Conference after Miami (Fla.) and Virginia Tech announce conference changes earlier in the year. The 12-university alignment also allows the ACC to begin a championship game beginning in 2005.

Oct. 13, 1923: Haskell (Kan.) Institute downs Kansas City University 98-0 to start the season. KCU eventually is outscored 623-0 by six opponents with a final loss at the hands of St. Mary’s (Kan.) by the largest margin at 131-0.

Oct. 15, 1988: Scott Mitchell of Utah racks up 627 yards of total offense (617 passing yards) as the Utes outscore Air Force 56-49 in a Western Athletic Conference showdown at Colorado Springs.
