Rutgers Gets First Bowl Win
by Mike Mitchell 12/29/06
Ray Rice ran for 170 yards and a touchdown as Rutgers rolled over Kansas State 37-10 in the Texas Bowl for its first bowl win ever.
Kansas State, under first-year head coach Ron Prince, fell to 7-6 with the loss. Rutgers improved to 11-2 and gave the Big East a second resounding win in its first two bowl games (South Florida dumped East Carolina 24-7 in the PapaJohns.com Bowl).
The Wildcats made the game interesting when they rallied from a quick 14-0 hole to get within 14-10 in the second quarter. But the Scarlet Knights didn't let them get any closer.
On the first play of the second half, Quintero Frierson returned an intercepted pass 26 yards for a touchdown. After Kansas State failed to make a first down on its next possession, Rice needed just two carries to take Rutgers 68 yards for another touchdown and a 31-10 lead.
Kansas State dropped to 6-7 in bowl games while Rutgers improved to 1-2. |
