Each week, Mike Mitchell examines the computer's picks and selects those which he believes have the best chance of being correct. Lines in parenthesis are the opening lines as reported at docsports.com. Later lines are used in the event of a "pick 'em" opening. The Congrove Computer Rankings' pick is shown outside the parenthesis. The HOME TEAM is in CAPS. You can research the computer's performance with each team and conference with the Team-By-Team Picks Tracking data. An explanation of how the computer's SU and ATS wins and losses are scored can be found at Weekly Picks Help.

EASY PICKINS:
The computer likes the favorite with room to spare.
2012 Regular Season: 94-27 SU (.777), 67-54 ATS (.554)
2013 Regular Season: 8-0 SU (1.000), 7-1 ATS (.875)

PAST RECORDS

Friday, August 30
Texas Tech (-2.5) by 6.68 over SMU - The Red Raiders have taken 14 in-a-row in the series, usually in a rout.
Texas Tech won 41-23. The computer won SU, won ATS.

Saturday, September 1
WASHINGTON (-2.5) by 8.95 over Boise State - The computer has the Broncos slipping to 7-5 and the Huskies going 8-4.
Washington won 38-6. The computer won SU, won ATS.

Northwestern (-8.5) by 24.17 over CALIFORNIA - Cal introduces new head coach Sonny Dykes and the computer has the Bears at the bottom of the PAC-12 pile. Conversely, the Wildcats are expected to be a beast of the Big Ten and going unbeaten until the conference title game vs. Ohio State. This should be a rout.
Northwestern won 44-30. The computer won SU, won ATS.

MARYLAND (-15) by 15.87 over Fiu - The Golden Panthers will be one of the worst teams in the land in 2013. It's Ron Turner's debut as the FIU head coach. The Terps should win by 24+.
Maryland wins 43-10. The computer won SU, won ATS.

NORTH TEXAS (-17) by 29.74 over Idaho - Seemingly always awful Idaho brings in Paul Petrino as head coach. North Texas is expected to have its best record (9-3) since 2003.
North Texas won 40-6. The computer won SU. won ATS.

Lsu (-5) by 6.51 over Tcu (at Arlington) - TCU is projected to be an average team at 6-6 while LSU (10-2 projection) will contend for the SEC West title.
LSU won 37-27. The computer won SU. won ATS.

TEXAS (-42) by 46.81 over New Mexico State - Usually I shy away from big spreads, but the opponent is a New Mexico State team picked to go 2-10 and they're having to play in Austin.
Texas won 56-7. The computer won SU, won ATS.

NOTRE DAME (-24.5) by 30.22 over Temple - The opening line has ballooned to 30 and it may still not be high enough.
Notre Dame won 28-6 The computer won SU, lost ATS.

HOLD YOUR HORSES:
The computer likes the favorite, but by fewer points than the oddsmakers.
2012 Regular Season: 52-17 SU (.754), 42-27 ATS (.609)
2013 Regular Season: 7-0 SU (1.000), 2-5 ATS (.286)
This Week: 7-0 SU (1.000), 2-5 ATS (.286)
PAST RECORDS

Thursday, August 29
UCF (-28) by 20.82 over Akron - There has been a 9.64 Power Points swing in the Congrove Computer Rankings since the end of last season. These teams kicked off the 2012 campaign in Akron with UCF as 16.5-point Vegas and a 26.64 computer choice so I had it in the Easy Pickin's and won. Akron stayed with 21 points or less in 9 of its 11 losses last year and, with a year under his belt, head coach Terry Bowden should field a moire competitive better squad in 2013.
UCF won 38-7. The computer won SU, lost ATS.

MINNESOTA (-17) by 15.05 over Unlv - The teams opened in Vegas last year with the Gophers winning 30-27 in triple-OT.
Minnesota won 51-23. The computer won SU, lost ATS.

Saturday, September 1
AUBURN (-13.5) by 5.58 over Washington State - Auburn breaks in Gus Malzahn as head coach. Both schools are forecasted to finish at or near the bottom of their respective conference division races.
Auburn won 31-24. The computer won SU, won ATS.

MICHIGAN (-26) by 7.16 over Central Michigan - Vegas may have it too large and the computer almost certainly has the spread to tight, but the difference is so gigantic that I can't avoid listing it.
Michigan won 59-9. The computer won SU, lost ATS.

CINCINNATI (-14) by 6.23 over Purdue - Tommy Tuberville's coming out party as head coach of the Bearcats. Purdue introduces new head coach Darrell Hazell from Kent State. Truthfully, anything could happen.
Cincinnati won 42-7. The computer won SU, lost ATS.

WISCONSIN (-45) by 34.88 over UMass - The Badgers will roll, but 45 is a big number to hit. Gary Andersen (Utah State) takes over for Brett Bielema as Wisconsin head coach.
Wisconsin won 45-0. The computer won SU, won ATS (no pushes in record-keeping. 46-0 would have been a computer loss).

Monday, September 2
Florida State (-10.5) by 2.29 over PITTSBURGH - Pitt leads the series 5-3 but this is the first meeting since 1983. Both schools are expected to start redshirt freshman QB's.
Florida State won 41-13. The computer won SU, lost ATS.

UPSETS:
The computer likes the underdog as the outright winner. I don't select the games in this category. Instead, we list every upset projected by the computer.
2012 Regular Season: 36-50 SU (.419), 42-44 ATS (.488)
2013 Regular Season: 5-5 SU (.500), 8-2 ATS (.800)
This Week: 5-5 SU (.500), 8-2 ATS (.800)
PAST RECORDS

Thursday, August 29
BOWLING GREEN by 3.31 over Tulsa (-3) - This is one of just two losses the computer gives Tulsa for the 2013 season. The other is at Oklahoma.
Bowling Green won 34-7. The computer won SU, won ATS.

Utah State by 9.12 over UTAH (-4.5) - Only thing that worries me with this game is that Gary Andersen left to take the head coaching job at Wisconsin so this is Matt Wells' (promoted from OC) first game anywhere as a head coach.
Utah won 30-26. The computer lost SU, won ATS.

Saturday, August 31
Louisiana-Lafayette by 8.51 over ARKANSAS (-14) - Brett Bielema's first season at Arkansas as he tries to help the team find its way after a 2012 debacle. I personally have a hard time buying this one, but UL-L is loaded (for a Sun Belt team).
Arkansas won 34-14. The computer lost SU, lost ATS.

Byu by 11.07 over VIRGINIA (-6) - Surprised the line opened with Virginia as the favorite. It has since flopped to BYU by a point in most places.
Virginia won 19-16. The computer lost SU, won ATS.

Georgia by 1.04 over CLEMSON (-2) - The computer has Georgia playing Stanford in the BCS Championship game so it better be right on this one.
Clemson won 38-35. The computer lost SU, lost ATS.

Northern Illinois by 3.20 over IOWA (-6.5) - Iowa eked out a 1-point win in Chicago a year ago. Offensive line coach Rod Carey was named as Dave Doeren's successor (moved to N.C. State) on December 2 and coached the Huskies (12-2) in their historic 31-10 Orange Bowl loss to Florida State.
Norther Illinois won 30-27. The computer won SU, won ATS.

Western Kentucky by 5.84 over Kentucky (-3) (at Nashville) - Bobby Petrino is the new head coach for the Hilltoppers. Kentucky is giving Mark Stoops his first shot as a head coach.
Western Kentucky won 35-26. The computer won SU, won ATS.

Utsa by 6.27 over NEW MEXICO (-6) - Larry Coker's team was 8-4 a year ago, though half of the wins were against lower-classified schools. However, the Roadrunners did win a rout at New Mexico State by 8 points more than the Lobos managed.
UTSA won 21-13. The computer won SU, won ATS.

Texas State by 7.36 over SOUTHERN MISS (-9.5) - Dennis Franchione's Bobcats were 4-8 a year ago and lost 4 games by 9 points or less. Southern Miss was winless a year ago and brings in new head coach and former Oklahoma State offensive coordinator Todd Monken who has no prior head coaching experience.
Texas State won 22-15. The computer won SU, won ATS.

Uab by 3.68 over TROY (-6) - Larry Blakeney is the 2nd-longest active tenured coach in the FBS, only behind Frank Beamer. But his Trojans have stumbled lately with just 8 wins over the last two seasons. The Blazers are projected by the computer to grab 5 wins this year in Garrick McGee's second season.
Troy won 34-31. The computer lost SU, won ATS.

Sunday, September 1
Colorado State by 11.33 over Colorado (-1.5) (at Denver) - The Vegas line opened favoring the Buffs but has since moved to a 2-1/2 to 3-point range in favor of the Rams. Colorado leads the all-time series by a mile, but the teams have split the last four battles with CSU taking last year's contest 22-17.
