The twilight game of a Friday, December 27 triple-header saw Syracuse beat Minnesota 21-17 in the Texas Bowl at Reliant Stadium in Houston.

The venue also serves as home for the National Football League's Houston Texans.

The Golden Gophers were the favorites to win the contest, but instead suffered their 6th straight bowl loss and remain winless in the postseason since 2004.

A ho-hum game saw the Orange lead 7-3 at halftime and stretch that advantage to 14-3 late in the 3rd quarter.

It got considerably more interesting in the 4th as Minnesota opened the period by scoring two touchdowns in a little over two minutes to go on top 17-14. That lead held until late in the game.

After Syracuse missed a game-tying 45-yard field goal with about 3-1/2 minutes left, the Orange forced a Minnesota punt and the booming 57-yard kick was returned even farther - 70 yards to the Gopher 14 - by Brisly Estime. QB Terrel Hunt scored two plays later on a 12-yard run at 1:14 and Minnesota got no further than the Syracuse 39 where it ended the game on two failed Hail Mary attempts.

The Congrove Computer Rankings at CollegeFootballPoll.com gave Minnesota a 5.74-point advantage in the contest.
