Navy Smothers Missouri To Reach 10-win Plateau
by CFP Staff
December 31, 2009
Navy QB Ricky Dobbs set the NCAA single-season record for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback with 24 in the regular season. He added three more and threw a TD pass in Navy's 35-13 rout of Missouri in the Texas Bowl.
The Midshipmen snapped a 3-bowl losing streak as the nation's No. 4 rushing offense controlled the clock for nearly 41 of the game's 60 minutes while churning out 365 yards on the ground.
The smaller Navy defense sacked Tiger QB Blaine Gabbert 4 times and harassed him into a sub-50 percent passing performance that included 2 interceptions.
Missouri's Denario Alexander did his best to help as he hauled in 6 of Gabbert's 15 completions for 137 yards and a TD. The nation's leading receiver accounted for nearly half of the team's 291 total yards.
The win gave Navy just its third 10-win season in history. The last came in 2004 and the first came in 1905. The Midshipmen are 18-9 over the last two seasons under head coach Ken Niumatalolo who was promoted when Paul Johnson moved to Georgia Tech. |
