Kansas spotted Minnesota a 14-7 lead, then reeled off 28 unanswered points en route to a 42-21 Insight Bowl win. The game marked the first time the Jayhawks made bowl appearances in consecutive seasons and they took advantage of the opportunity by claiming their third straight bowl win.
Todd Reesing threw 4 TD passes for Kansas. Dezmon Briscoe caught two of those while recording 14 catches on the night for 201 yards and the Player of the Game Award. His first touchdown went for 60 yards on the first play of the game.
Minnesota's first play was a 75-yard pass play to Eric Decker and the game was tied just three plays later on Jon Hoese's 1-yard run. The Gophers led 14-7 when they completed a 79-yard drive the next time they had the ball with a 2-yard Hoese run.
That's when Kansas started its 28-point run.
Kerry Meier had 10 receptions for 113 yards and a score. Meier also had a TD pass when he he caught one touchdown pass and threw Briscoe his 3rd touchdown catch on a 32-yard play in the 3rd quarter that blew the game open at 35-14.
Reesing was 27-of-35 for 313 yards. He had just one pass picked off.
Kansas completed an 8-5 season with back-to-back wins. The Jayhawks upset Missouri in the regular season finale.
Minnesota lost its fifth straight after a 7-1 start to finish 7-6.
The last time Minnesota played in this game, their head coach got fired. The 2006 Insight Bowl saw Texas Tech rally from a 31-point second-half deficit midway through the third quarter to stun Minnesota 44-41 in overtime. Glen Mason was canned two days later.
