Oregon and Auburn will meet for the first time ever when they put their undefeated records on the line in the BCS Championship game on January 10 in Glendale, Arizona.
Oregon (12-0) posted a school record 12 wins and is the first PAC-10 team to finish league play with 9-0 record. The Ducks lead the nation in scoring (49.3 ppg) and are second in total offense (537.5 ypg).
Sophomore RB LaMichael James, a CFP All-American, was the Doak Walker Award winner for best running back and the 3rd-place finisher in the Heisman Trophy chase. James leads the nation in rushing with 1,682 yards (152.9 ypg) and 21 rushing touchdowns. That’s the most yards rushing by a sophomore in PAC-10 history. He needs 41 yards to set the school single-season rushing mark (1,722 by Jonathan Steward, 2007). With 3,228 career rushing yards, he needs 69 yards to become Oregon’s all-time leading rusher (3,296 by Derek Loville, 1986-89).
Oregon defensive back and return specialist has the unique honor of being named a CFP All-American at both positions. Harris had 4 punt return touchdowns while averaging 19.46 yards per return. As a defensive back, he had 5 interceptions with 1 TD and led the country with 15 passes breakups.
Chip Kelly is 22-3 (.888) in two seasons as the head coach at Oregon.
Gene Chizik is 21-5 (.807) in two season at Auburn.
Auburn (13-0) tied the school record with 13 wins in a season. The Tigers were left out of the BCS title game the first time they went 13-0 in 2004 and went on to defeat Virginia Tech 16-13 in the Sugar Bowl.
The Tigers are No. 4 in scoring (42.7 per game) and No. 7 in total offense (497.7 ypg). CFP All-American QB Cameron Newton won the 2010 Heisman Trophy, the Maxwell Award for best player, the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award, the Davey O'Brien Award for top quarterback and the AP Player of the Year award.
Gene Chizik received the Eddie Robinson Award as the nation's top coach, and was also named Home Depot Coach of the Year.
DE Nick Fairley was proclaimed the 2010 Lombardi Award winner as the nation's top collegiate lineman.
Newton completed 165-of-246 passes for 2,589 yards, 28 TD's and 6 INT's. He ranked only 60th in the nation in passing yards per game but 1st in passer rating at 188.15. Newton was also 13th in the nation in rushing with 108.38 yards per game for a total of 1,409 yards and 20 TD's. He joins Nevada QB Colin Keapernick (2010) and Florida QB Tim Tebow (2007) as the only other players in FBS history to throw 20 or more TD passes and run for 20 or more TD's in the same season.
Auburn split the 1957 national title (AP) with Ohio State (UPI). The Tigers went 10-0, but did not play in a bowl game. The Buckeyes were 9-1 and ended the year with a Rose Bowl win over, ironically, Oregon.
Auburn is 20-13-2 alltime in bowl games and 1-0 under Chizik. The Tigers are on a 3-bowl winning streak and have won six of their last seven.
Oregon is 9-14 in bowl games and 0-1 under Kelly. The Ducks are 5-5 in their last 10 bowl games, but are just 2-5 in the last seven.
SEC teams are 6-0 overall in BCS Championship games and Auburn becomes the 5th SEC team to play for the BCS title, following in the footsteps of Tennessee, LSU, Florida and Alabama. USC has a 1-1 record as the lone representative of the PAC-10 in the 13-yar history of BCS Championship games.
CollegeFootballPoll.com's Congrove Computer Rankings (a.k.a. CCR Top 120) projected Oregon to go undefeated and win the PAC-10, but it forecasted Auburn to go 9-3 overall and 5-3 in the SEC West.
The computer was 12-0 in forecasting the winner of Oregon games this season and 9-2 against the spread. It was 10-2 straight up with Auburn games, but just 5-6 against the spread. The computer favors the Ducks to win the game by 5-1/2. (Such information is tracked for the sole purpose of recording the computer's accuracy in picking games and ranking teams. The game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN on Monday, January 10 at 8:00 p.m. (ET) from the relatively small 63,400-seat University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona which serves as the home of the NFL's Arizona Cardinals.
